Doors of Kypseli by author and illustrator Eleanor Lines documents 100 wrought-iron doors from Kypseli, one of Athens's most architecturally distinctive neighbourhoods.
A Visual Archive of Modern Athens
Most of the featured doors date from the 1930s to the 1960s, when influences from Art Deco, Bauhaus and modernism entered Athenian residential architecture.
Lines photographed and catalogued the entrances before digitally reconstructing damaged or missing elements. The final designs are presented as precise blue illustrations, allowing their geometry, rhythm and variety to stand out.
Circles, grids, curves and asymmetric patterns reveal how much design attention was once given to even the most practical parts of an apartment building.
Preserving Overlooked Design
Entrance doors are rarely treated as architectural heritage. They are often replaced, altered or left to deteriorate during renovations.
